Opposition against net neutrality
Large ISPs, such as Verizon, Comcast, and Time Warner, make up the main opposition net neutrality regulations face in the US. The ISPs create the infrastructure through which the Internet operates, and have immense potential control over the data they help deliver.
What do they believe?
Before the FCC passed its Open Internet rules in February of 2015, ISPs were attempting to have services pay for access to an Internet "fast lane" so that they could prioritize bandwidth. There were also instances where they throttled service and censored content. Though these practices have been struck down by the FCC, people are still working to oppose the new rules.
Arguments against the new rules are varied.
Some insist that the Internet has thrived so far with little interference from the government and that these new rules provide too much regulatory power to the government. They claim that the infrastructure and pricing models won't be able to evolve and be innovated upon with the government controlling it as a utility.
Some oppose them because they fear the idea of a bill from 1934 governing a technology that was inconceivable at the time it was made. Comcast's David Cohen claims that nothing in Title II gives the FCC regulatory power over ISPs. Former governor of Florida Jeb Bush has said Just think of the logic of using a 1934 law that was designed when we did have a monopoly for wire-line service as the basis to regulate the most dynamic part of life in America. It’s not going to be good for consumers. It’s certainly not going to be good for innovation.
NCTA claims that Title II places thousands of unnecessary regulations on the Internet under the guise of net neutrality. They state that these regulations will cost the consumer money as a result of endless legal challenges, as well halt innovation.
In response to the FCC's ruling in February 2015, Verizon posted a message to its site written entirely in Morse code. The message, translated, calls the rules a throwback move.
They claim that the government's lack of involvement in the Internet over the last two decades has allowed unprecedented investment and evolution that has resulted in the system we know and love today.
